If you are looking for anything for dressmaking and sewing, this wonderful treasure trove of beautiful fabrics must be your first stop. Gwenyth is super knowledgeable and her advice on fabrics and colours is second to none. Hugely enjoyed my two visits, and although I live in the west of Glasgow, I will be back!

I contacted The Dress Fabric Shop, Bruntsfield, out of the blue, in a panic. My daughter’s marriage was imminent, the whole country was in lock-down and we were strictly shielding. So no hope of getting to a dress maker for fittings, so I rashly volunteered to have a go at it myself. But no hope of getting to a fabric shop to choose fabrics either. My daughter had organised for the event to be live-streamed, so my efforts would be broadcast far and wide. And, of course, I wanted my daughter to feel wonderful and for them both to have a perfect day, despite the fact that all their original plans had gone to pot. But I hadn’t sewn a thing since I was fifteen! Gwenyth made everything all right. More than that. She made it fun. She was friendly, encouraging and supremely helpful, posting fabric samples, guiding on options and choices, offering invaluable and much needed tips and advice. I always felt excited, confident and enthusiastic to keep going after talking to her. Cheered. Up-lifted. In safe hands. I could not thank her enough for all she did for us. She removed the panic and made the whole journey a joy.

In this year like no other, it has been my dressmaking that has kept me sane.
I live in the West of Scotland and in normal times travel to Edinburgh to this fantastic little treasure trove of beautiful, quality fabrics.
However, during lockdown, Gwenyth has supplied me with fabric samples, some from the website, others not. Her mail order service is very efficient. I can place an order by telephone and it is with me in a few days.
As new fabrics have arrived, so have the samples. As a result I have a fantastic new wardrobe. All I need now is somewhere to wear it.
Can’t wait for the shop to open again.

I knew of the dressfabric company from a trip to Edinburgh some years ago. I have done small amounts of business over the years as my time for dressmaking was limited due to full time work. I retired the 1st lockdown day March 2020 and consequently contacted Gwenyth to discuss fabric for a dress, she has been amazing over the past year sending photographs of fabrics for me sending samples and promptly sending fabrics and haberdashery.
I cannot thank Gwenyth enough for keeping me sane, the fabrics and service are excellent and Gwenyth is truly inspirational and extremley knowledgeable!

My daughter fell in love with a particular wedding dress style and unfortunately, we could not find the lace anywhere in New Zealand, where we live. I offered to try to find some whilst on an overseas trip to Scotland and the UK, and I stumbled across The Dress Fabric Company while searching for high quality fabric stores. I am so glad I did! Gwenyth was an absolute delight to deal with, and spent quality time with me going through samples of lace from her myriad of selection books. We found the most exquisite lace, which my daughter adored and so we ordered the quantity required. Gwenyth ordered it directly from the supplier, after phoning to ensure they had the required amount. The lace was sent directly to my daughter in New Zealand, and actually arrived there before we got home! I cannot speak highly enough of Gwenyth and her service. A true lady who goes out of her way to ensure her brides are exquisitely taken care of.

What a find – Gwenyth’s expertise is brilliant! I have never before been into a fabric shop where the fabrics had been so well chosen – tremendously tasteful, versatile and with such a gorgeous colour palate. Gwenyth’s eye for colour & style are fantastic – she immediately guessed which colour silk was best with the fabric of my Mother of the Bride designer dress and actually had the same fabric and some of the silk in the shop. Then she went through the pattern books knowing where to find the best patterns for me and recommended a bespoke button covering service – her extensive experience and knowledge is second to none! Whether you have an occasion in mind or are simply itching to get sewing again, there will always be something interesting and delightful to see here.
Gwyneth wears her expertise and knowledge very lightly - she is helpful and will offer advice if asked, but will not be in the slightest bit fazed if you just want to browse and leave with ideas. She has a wonderful sense of colour and 'what works' and is very professional in making sure the fabric will be suitable for the look the customer wants. I find that honesty and helpfulness refreshing and it means I return and return and recommend the shop to my friends. The fabrics themselves are lovely, and Gwyneth seems to have a knack of obtaining current but slightly different colours and textures. I have made dresses for weddings and formal events as well as some simple linen things for the summer (?) and winter skirts and shirts (which have had rather more wear) with fabrics from her shop, and all have been a joy to sew.
Gwyneth has an astonishimg memory and often remembers if the event was a special one and what fabric was worn - many people come back to report on how they got on!
This shop adds a lot to a corner of Edinburgh and is well worth a detour!"

"I first spotted The Dress Fabric Company a few years ago - I kept noticing it from the No 23 bus on fleeting visits to Edinburgh from my home in Orkney; .... on that first visit, surrounded by bales of beautiful fabrics - silks, linens, sheers, textures, plains and patterns, I knew I had found a treasure house. My daughter was getting married in April 2010, and there were eight dresses to make! Gwenyth filled me with such confidence, the daunting task I was about to undertake didn't seem quite so overwhelming. Gwenyth quickly arranged for samples to be sent to Orkney, and through ongoing correspondence, she offered much advice and support until at the end of January I received a large parcel with all the fabrics, linings, and notions. Since then, I email with pattern details and a vague idea, and a few days later, a well judged array of samples arrives. Once a decision is made - a phone call is all that's needed and fabric and notions are on their way. Gwenyth has a great capacity for knowing her customer, and assisting them in realising their expectations."
